Advice For Growing Beautiful Flowers, Produce And Other Plants

Organic gardening is becoming an increasingly popular activity. Just using the tips here will show you how you can get started now with an organic garden. Follow our tips and reap the rewards.

Transform the handles of your tools into convenient measuring devices. Tools with long handles, such as shovels, hoes and rakes can be made into measuring sticks. All you have to do is lay them on the floor then use a measuring tape to measure their length. Label the distances on the handle with a marker pen that will not smear or fade away. The next time you find yourself in your garden, you will have one large ruler right at your fingertips.

Do not plant perennials that are prone to snail infestation. These creatures can wreak havoc on a garden in a short time. Certain perennials that don’t have tough leaves are especially tasty to snails and slugs. There are, however, certain types of perennials that slugs and snails hate. Most of these varieties either have tough leaves or taste unappealing. Some perennial families that snails and slugs won’t eat include achillea, campanula, and helleborus.

Do not spend your money on chemicals to fight mildew. The best solution is mixing baking soda, a drop of liquid dish detergent and water together in a spray bottle. Use a spray bottle to apply to your plants weekly until the issue clears up. Do not worry about your plants; the baking soda cannot harm them.

Do a soil analysis prior to planting. For a small fee, a soil analysis can be obtained – based on that report – the soil can be properly enriched to support a vibrant garden. It is worth having this information so that crops do not get ruined. Most Cooperative Extension offices provide this service.

It is a good idea to pre-soak your seeds in a dark environment overnight. Place some seeds into a small container, then fill it with water until it is almost to the top. The idea here is for your seeds to become fully hydrated by the time they hit the dirt. This will also give your seeds a much better chance to survive and mature.

A simple way to lower the alkaline content of your soil is to dilute it with coffee grounds. This is an easy and inexpensive solution to increase the acid content back into the soil. You will notice that your vegetables and greens will have a stronger taste.

Before you start planting your garden, plan it! Planning gives you a map of your garden. When your plants begin sprouting and all look alike, you can refer to your plan to remind yourself of which plants are which. In addition, some plants are so small you might forget you planted them once all your plants sprout. Planning stops these plants from getting lost in the crowd.

A good but unusual organic solution for weeding your plants is try “boiling” your weeds way. Considering that boiling water is rather safe, you don’t have to worry about toxins in your soil or at your dinner table. Although this method is organic, it does pose a danger to your plants. Boiling water damages the weed roots and will inhibit future growth.

Get a wheelbarrow and a kneeling stool to work in your garden. Gardening can be very tough on the knees as you spend much time leaning near the ground, so a portable stool can make all the difference to your comfort. As well, gardening can involve some heavy lifting and moving, so a strong wheelbarrow can really make that aspect much more effortless.

Plant items with fall color. It’s not necessary to think this way, however. In terms of colorful foliage, fall is the time of year admired by many. Maple trees produce yellow and red leaves, just like Beech and Dogwood trees. When selecting shrubs that will be colorful during the fall, consider hydrangea, barberry, or cotoneaster.

You just have to be patient if you want to get your organic garden into tip top shape. The above tips will help you make a wonderful garden. Just remember to apply these tips as you have read them and your garden should do just fine.
