Choosing The Right Kind Of Plants For Your Garden

One great way to improve your diet and give yourself a fun an interesting hobby is to plant an organic garden. For best results, however, you need to put in the right amount of effort. You probably have many questions about how to accomplish your gardening goals.

Consider starting your plants in pots and then planting the seedlings in your garden. This insures that the plants will grow and thrive into adulthood. In addition, it lets you tighten the time in between plantings. Your seedlings will be ready to go in as soon as you remove the previous set of mature plants.

If powdery mildew appears on your plants, don’t purchase expensive chemical solutions. Mix some baking soda and a very small amount of liquid soap into water. Then, spray this mixture onto all of your infected plants once each week till the mildew is gone. Baking soda is a good way to get rid of mildew on your plants gently.

If you would like to have flowers in your garden that last through the spring and summer seasons, plant bulbs. Bulbs are hearty and will continue to grow every year. Different types of bulbs bloom at different times, so if you choose appropriately, you can have blooms from early spring to late summer.

Autumn not only means colder weather but new vegetables to plant. Instead of a clay pot, show some fall spirit by using a hollow pumpkin to plant your lettuce or kale in. First, cut out the pumpkin’s top layer and remove the seeds. Then, spray some Wilt-Pruf on the insides to prevent the rot that would follow otherwise. Once the pumpkin has been prepared, it is ready for planting.

Take extra care of any fragile shrubs that are known to drop their leaves in the autumn. If you have a few potted shrubs, they should be shielded from the wintry weather. Tie the tops tightly together, and cover the wigwam with a sheet or blanket draped loosely over it. Using fabric, rather than plastic, allows air circulation and prevents rotting from moisture build up.

Split up irises. You can increase your stock of irises by dividing up overgrown clumps. Lift the dead bulbous irises. You will be able to split the bulb easily and replant it to get more flowers next year. Rhizomes, however, need to be divided by using a gardening knife. Cut new outside pieces and dispose of the center. At the least, each piece will need to have one strong offshoot. Immediately replant all your selected cuttings.

Use fertilizer for maximum planting success. Use commercially composted products in your garden to help your plants grow. This will reduce the chance of pathogens. There are many fertilization methods out there; the type is not quite as important as actually using something.

If you are new to gardening, make sure you read and follow all the directions on any tool or chemical you use. If you use your gardening chemicals wrong, you can abrade or even burn your skin. Protect your plants and yourself by knowing how to correctly use all of your gardening implements.

Learn the ideal times for harvesting your vegetables. Individual vegetables have distinct windows of time to pick for getting the greatest flavors. For instance, for the best flavor, zucchini and baby peas should be picked when they are young. Let your tomatoes, however, linger on the vine until they are fully ripe. To get the most out of your gardening efforts, find out when to harvest your crops.

Give them a nutritious drink by using the water that you boiled your veggies in. You should also try using a bit of coffee grounds or tea to increase the acidity of the soil for your gardenias or your rhododendrons. Chamomile tea is a good remedy against fungus.

If you want to draw advantageous insects to your garden, plant some heather. Bees will go straight for these plants in the spring. Spiders, ground beetles and other useful insects are drawn to heather beds because they don’t tend to get jostled around. With this in mind make sure you wear some gloves when you are working with the heather.
