A garden is more than just a way to decorate. It’s not even necessary that you have a green thumb. Gardens give the people working on them a feeling of serenity and a close bond with nature. When you excel at gardening, these effects can prove very positive within you life.
Plant perennials that are resistant to slug and snail infestations. Snails and slugs can do irreparable damage to your garden in a single night. They often enjoy feeding on perennials with very smooth and tender leaves. Young plants are a special favorite of theirs. Perennials that have thick, furry leaves and unpleasant tastes are less likely to attract slugs and snails. Consider planting these varieties of perennials to discourage slugs and snails from eating your flowers. Euphorbia and achillea are examples of slug-proof perennials.
Garden vegetables should be planted in areas of the ground that receive a minimum of six hours of daily sunlight. Most vegetables that can be grown need that much sun to grow well and quickly. This is true of some flowers.
Be sure to split the irises. The more you divide clusters of irises, the more your irises will multiply. Pick up bulbous irises after the foliage dies. The bulbs split in your hand, then you replant them, and they will most likely flower next year. You can divide rhizomes with a knife. Cut several new pieces out of the outside and get rid of the old center. If done properly, each piece that remains for planting should have a minimum of one viable offshoot. Replant them immediately.

Spray old aftershave, perfume, or scented products around the grass of your garden to prevent your dog from entering it. Your dog will find more interesting scents to explore elsewhere and leave your garden alone.

Try to put an aspirin in the water to get rid of plant diseases. Three aspirins per four gallons of water will help keep your plants healthy. You can easily spray the plans with this concoction to help them fight of disease. Spraying should be one time every three weeks.
Keep your plants in a warm, moist environment, if possible. The plants need this temperature in order to effectively grow. If you want to save money on gas bills in the winter, you can provide local heating for the plants with a heat lamp instead.

Pine needles make a great organic mulch. Some plants do better in soil with high acidity as they are highly acidic themselves. Pine needles are an excellent form of mulch for these types of plants. Use an old laundry basket to bring your fresh produce in from the garden. Most laundry baskets are designed with a multitude of holes. This makes them a perfect strainer for washing your vegetables. Rinse your crops while in the laundry basket to strain the excess water.
