Gardening is a relatively inexpensive, relaxing hobby. The elderly and the very young can help create aromatic flowers, delicious vegetables or lush landscape. Take the proper approach to laying sod. Get your soil ready before you lay the sod. Break the soil into fine tilth and make sure you remove any weeds as well. Flatten your soil and make it slightly compact. You then will want to thoroughly wet the soil. Lay the sod in rows, and make sure the joints do not overlap. Sod should be firm and have an even, flat surface without gaps. Water the sod for two weeks and then you can safely walk on it as it will have had time to properly root.

Slowly acclimatize your plants to the outside environment to keep from shocking them. Put the plants outside in the sun for one to two hours in the beginning. Throughout the week, you should leave your plants out for a little longer each day. Hopefully, after about a week or so, your plants should have adjusted to the change. Now you can transplant them without any worries.

During winter, you should take your favorite plants inside. Try to save plants that are expensive or that are resistant enough to handle the transition. Dig around the roots carefully and transfer the plant to a pot.

When gardening, beware of stink bugs and other insects, particularly in the autumn. Stink bugs are attracted to tomatoes, beans and most fruits. They can do serious damage in your garden, so look for an effective method of reducing their population.

Mix the grounds of coffee in soil that has a lot of alkaline. The coffee grounds provide a cheap way to re-supply needed acid to the dirt. This solution will make the vegetables you grow healthier and more flavorful.

Split up the irises. Overgrown clumps of irises can be divided up to increase your numbers of this lovely flower. Try to life the bulbous irises when foliage begins to die. The bulbs should split naturally, and the replanted bulbs will usually flower within a year. Rhizomes may need to be divided by using a knife. Discard the center and cut pieces from the exterior. Each piece needs one strong offshoot. Set your cuttings into the ground right away.

Whether you have been gardening for a few days or a few decades, you must never deviate from the instructions on the labeling of all implements and chemicals. Garden chemicals can cause skin irritation and eye injury. Keep your body safe and follow directions.

Consider planting evergreens in your garden that produce berries. This will keep your garden colorful, even during those months when other plants are not growing. Some evergreens that will provide winter color are the American Holly, Common Snowberry, American Cranberrybush, and the Winterberry.

Spray fragrances such as old perfume or aftershave on grass around your garden to help keep your dog away from the plants. This can help mask any scents which attract animals so pets will now avoid the garden.

Coffee grounds are a great addition to soil. These coffee grounds have many nitrogenous nutrients that your plants could use. Plants need nitrogen in order to thrive, so give it a natural source with coffee grounds, then watch everything come to life much more quickly.
