A garden makes a home look great but does even more than that. For some people, gardening is more than a hobby. Gardening can be a meditative activity, one that cements your appreciation of life, and one that even instills the gardener with a sense of peace and tranquility. The effects can be profound if you’re good at it.
Turn your tool handles into convenient rulers. Tools with long handles, such as rakes, shovels or hoes can work as great measuring sticks. Lay the tools down on the floor, then place a measuring tape along the handle. Label the distances with a permanent marker. Now when you go to work in the garden, you will have a ruler that is large at your fingertips!
Cover any wall or fence with climbers. Plants that grow as climbers are quite versatile, helping you hide ugly walls or fences, many times within only one season of growth. They may grow up through some existing shrubs and trees, and can even be worked to grow around an arbor. Some require ties attaching them to supports, but others will attach themselves to any surface nearby. A few good choices are climbing roses, wisteria, jasmine, honeysuckle and clematis.
Your plants will reach maximum growth if they have a sufficient supply of carbon dioxide. Plants tend to grow better when the CO2 levels are higher. A greenhouse can concentrate the levels of CO2. When it is exposed to high carbon dioxide levels, a plant has the best growing condition possible.
Be diligent in your efforts to banishing weeds! Weeds can truly ruin a good garden. To help with weed destruction, use white vinegar. White vinegar will kill those pesky weeds. Keep a solution of vinegar diluted with water on hand to spray on weeds.
Ensure that your plants are kept dry, and aerated daily. Parasites are attracted to the moisture on plants. An example of a common plant parasite is fungi. Fungicidal spray treatments can contain fungi, but spraying prior to problems even developing in the first place is the best way to go about it.
Before you start working in your garden, purchase a wheelbarrow and a good kneeling stool. It can be very uncomfortable on the knees when working so close to the ground, so a light, portable stool makes gardening easier. You will need a wheelbarrow in order to perform various gardening chores, it is a good thing to have on hand.
Plan your garden, and plant with fall colors in mind. That doesn’t have to be way it is though! Autumn is the most colorful season of all, foliage-wise. Maple, beech, and dogwood trees are many colors in the fall, from yellow to a deeper crimson. Consider hydrangea, barberry and cotoneaster when considering purchasing a shrub.
Prevent damage from the sun by making sure you dress correctly whenever you go outside to garden. Wear a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen to protect your skin from the damaging effects of the sun. Protecting yourself from harmful UV rays means you are less likely to get sunburned or suffer skin cancer later in life.
When you are doing work in your garden, be efficient. Do not spend half an hour looking everywhere for a tool. In addition to keeping your gardening tools in one location, you should also clean your tools after each use. If you use lots of tools, consider using a tool belt or even just some pants that have lots of pockets.
Apply these tips to make your garden a beautiful oasis. It is a decision you will not regret, especially when you see all your plants alive and blooming. If you allow it, gardening will change your life. So get started!
