Garden In Disrepair? Use These Helpful Tips To Get It Into Shape!

The trend toward organic foods has gradually escalated to become more of a movement; a permanent shift in the way we think about the foods that we put into our bodies. Anyone living this kind of life usually has to organically grow their own herbs and plants to maintain their way of living. Check out the helpful organic growth tricks listed below.

Find some plants that will give you a higher yield. It is quite common to find that hybrids, which are often able to resist disease and withstand cold climates, produce yields much larger than their conventional counterparts.

You can alleviate this problem by planting grasses that your cat will naturally gravitate towards. You could also repel your pet by planting rosemary or placing citrus fruit peels around your garden.

Are fresh mint leaves something you love but cannot stand how quickly they grow all over your garden? Rein in their growth by planting the mint in a large pot or garden container instead. This container can be placed in the soil if you prefer the look of mint in your garden, and it will continue to contain the roots of your mint and prevent it from taking over.

It is possible to use natural materials as well as other plants to help keep pests away from your garden. Slugs can be kept at bay with a patch of marigolds or pungent vegetables. Insects can be deterred if you use wood ash instead of mulch around trees and shrub seedlings. Natural materials and plants can be just as effective as chemical pesticides at keeping unwanted visitors out of your garden!

Do not use broad-spectrum pesticides within your garden. Broad-spectrum pesticides not only kill pests, but also “good” bugs like ground beetles that eat pests. Beneficial insects are more susceptible to toxic pesticides than their annoying counterparts, so a broad-spectrum pesticide could kill all of the good bugs first, allowing the population of bad pests to multiply. This will cause a cycle to start where you will need to keep increasing the amount of pesticide you are using.

You can attract the insects you need by planting heather. Heather is very attractive to bees, and when bees first emerge in the spring, it is an early source of nectar. In addition, beds of heather are usually left alone. Because of this, insects that are good for your garden often make them a home, such as beetles or spiders. Keep this in mind and always wear gloves when you prune your heather!

Be sure you plant strawberries in your garden for your children, you want to make sure you especially plant everbearing strawberries as well. Kids delight in the idea of growing things and seeing how things change over time. Explain every step to your child and he or she will hang on to your every word.

You can help to prevent your plants from developing diseases with aspirin water. Dissolve one and one-half aspirins into two gallons of cold water, and use it to fortify your plants. You can simply spray them with the mixture to help aid them in fighting off diseases. Plants should be sprayed once every two to three weeks.

When it is harvest time, use a laundry basket. A benefit of using something like a laundry basket is that it can strain for you, as well as hold a large amount of produce. The basket won’t be affected by the water and it will drain right off as though it were poured into a large sieve.

With more knowledge comes a higher level of skill and success. While these tips primarily cover only the basics, they give you a place to start your organic gardening venture.
