Gardening Like A Pro: Organic Gardening Tips

You should keep your seeds damp without drowning them in water. Spray water over the soil to keep it moist, and place the pots or trays in which you have your seeds in water so that the soil can absorb the water. Make sure you replace the water in which your pots are standing regularly.

Tend to your garden a few steps at a time. A garden requires ongoing maintenance, and becomes a big time drain if you let things pile up until the weekend. Stop by the garden for a few minutes each day and deadhead some flowers while you’re waiting for dinner to cook or pull a few weeds while watching the kids play.

The best time to water your organic garden is early in the morning. By watering at the start of the day, you are allowing any moisture that accumulates on the leaves to dissipate. This helps to discourage the growth of any mildew or fungus on the leaves that cold air and water would combine to create.

When you first begin using organic produce you will realize that it tends to rot quite a bit faster. This is because less preservatives are used. Having a lower shelf life means that you need to cook or eat the produce a little bit faster than you would normal store bought options.

When growing your own organic tomatoes you should always alternate the tomato bed. The reason is because this will reduce the tomatoes’ risk of catching soil borne diseases like early blight and bacterial spot. These particular diseases can destroy your tomato plants, so you need to lower the risk of your tomatoes catching them as much as possible.

You should rotate your garden every year. Planting the same family of plants in the same area over and over can cause disease and fungus to start growing. The next year, when you plant the same plants in the same area of your garden, they’ll be exposed to these problems. If you change things up by planting things in different places, you can naturally prevent fungus and disease from taking over.
