Gardening Tips For Growing Better Organic Foods

There are many people who’d like to have their own organic garden, but not many take the time to actually create one. Choose perennials that won’t be taken out by slugs. These mollusks are capable of consuming an entire garden full of flowers in a single night. These pests normally go after plants with thin little leaves and plants that have yet to fully mature. Perennials with hairy, tough leaves as well as those with unpleasant taste are not appetizing to snails and slugs. A few great choices are achillea, campanula, and heuchera. Other options from which you can choose are hellebourus and euphorbia.

Don’t cut your grass down by the soil when you run the mower. If you allow your grass to grow a little longer, the roots will go down deeper into the dirt, helping the grass grow better and remain hydrated. Short grass tends to have shallow roots, which can cause dried out, brown patches to occur.

You should make sure to divide your irises. You can divide those overgrown clumps and increase the amount of irises you have. Pick up bulbous irises after the foliage dies. You will be able to split the bulb easily and replant it to get more flowers next year. If you have a rhizome you will need to split it with a knife. New pieces should be cut from the outside, then the old center you want to discard. Divide your pieces carefully; they should each have one good quality offshoot apiece. For optimum viability, plant your new cuttings into the ground without delay.

Surround your vegetable plants with organic mulch, a few inches worth. The mulch help keeps the soil that is around the plants much more moist for much longer. This is also efficient in preventing weeds from growing. You’ll save a ton of time if you don’t have to constantly pull out weeds.

Think about using evergreens in your yard that produce berries during the year. These will help give your garden a burst of color, even in the winter months when most other vegetation has lost their colors. Some evergreens that will provide winter color are the American Holly, Common Snowberry, American Cranberrybush, and the Winterberry.

Get a wheelbarrow, and a stool so that you can kneel down while gardening. Working in the garden means you’ll be down on the ground a lot. This can cause knee pain, so if you have a stool, you’ll have an easier time. There is also a lot of heavy lifting involved with gardening, so a good wheelbarrow is a great tool to have around.
