Gardening serves more purposes than simply aesthetics and decoration. Gardening can be an activity for a lot people. It is not limited to simply green-thumbed enthusiasts. It is an activity which offers the gardener opportunities for achieving serenity and gaining a greater appreciation of life. The effects can be profound, especially if you have any talent at it.
Start your seedlings in pots inside and then transplant them into your garden. This can give your seedlings the advantage they need to survive and reach adulthood. This method also reduces the waiting time between plantings. Your seedlings will be ready to go in as soon as you remove the previous set of mature plants.
To save space in your garden, try planting your crops in blocks rather than in the traditional rows. Rows end up leaving too much space between plants for needless pathways. Blocks help keep plants tight together without sacrificing production. Small variety kitchen vegetables do best in blocks that are arranged in a wide bed.
Use groundcover perennials in sunny areas. Groundcover perennials can be used as an alternative to grass where there is minimal foot traffic, or in an area where grass is difficult to maintain, such as on a slope. They are also handy in between larger perennials, as they help to suppress weeds and keep the soil moist and cool. Good choices for groundcover perennials are creeping thyme, ajuga, various sedums, alyssum and armeria.
Choose perennials that won’t be taken out by slugs. Snails and slugs can quickly wreak havoc on a garden. These pests prefer plants with thin smooth leaves. Plant some helleborus or euphorbias along with your other perennials. There are perennials that slugs do not want to eat, the ones that they hate have hairy leaves, or are unappealing to their taste. Some of these plants include achillea, campanula, euphorbia, hellaborus, and heuchera.
During hot weather, water your plants more frequently and deeply. When your plants do not get enough water, their roots work themselves up close to the surface, which means they will dry out quicker. If you water deeply, the roots will stay well underground to get to the water down below.
Save money by drying the seeds from your annuals to plant next year. Petunias, zinnias and impatiens are just a few of the flowers from which it is easy to extract and save seeds. You will have to extract the seed pod from some flowers, and wait for it to split open. With others, such as marigolds, you will have to open the flower and extract the seeds yourself. After extracting the seeds, let them dry for at least a week. Place them in a jar with a rubber seal, and add silica gel pouches to keep them from absorbing moisture. Store them in a cool, dry location until you’re ready to plant them next year.
