Choose perennials that slugs are not attracted to. It is alarming to see how quickly slugs, and their cousin snails, can annihilate a plant. They’re particularly fond of perennials with smooth and thin leaves, especially if the plants are young. Some varieties of perennials are not preferred by snails and slugs, particularly perennials that have hairy, tough leaves or a taste that isn’t appetizing. Good choices in this category are plants such as achillea, campanula, and euphorbia. Heuchera and helleborus also work well.

Plants will respond with maximum growth if they have the amount of CO2 they require. Often, plants achieve better growth when they are surrounded by high levels of CO2. A greenhouse has the best levels available. To maximize your plants’ growth, make sure to monitor these levels to ensure they’re adequate.

When gardening, beware of stink bugs and other insects, particularly in the autumn. Fruits, peppers and tomatoes are among the foods they love to eat. If they go unnoticed, they can cause large amounts of harm to your garden, so remember to take protective measures to reduce the population of stink bugs there.

It is very important to keep the weeds from taking over in your garden. Weeds can truly ruin a good garden. To aid in this venture, you might want to use white vinegar. White vinegar is a weed killer! Try spraying some white vinegar in water when you are pulling weeds from your garden.

If you have many low-growing plants in your garden, get yourself a pair of gardening knee pads. Long hours spent in the garden will wreak havoc on your knees. A set of quality knee pads designed for gardening can be a world of relief for your central leg joints.

For an unusual, but effective, organic solution to weeding young plants, try “boiling” the weeds away. This is a safe way to eliminate weeds, as this will not damage the soil. All you need to do is apply boiling water right to the weeds you want to get rid of. Be careful not to get any on the plants you want to keep. Boiling water damages the weed roots and will inhibit future growth.

Do you like mint, but not how they ruin your garden? Keep the growth under control by growing them in a large gardening pot instead. You can even plant the container in the ground. That way, the roots won’t be able to escape the container, and the plant won’t overrun your garden.

You should divide irises. Try increasing your stock by dividing your overgrown clumps of plants. When the foliage dies it’s time to lift the bulbous irises out of the ground. The bulbs will automatically split in you hand, and will likely flower the year after being replanted. If you have a rhizome you will need to split it with a knife. Cut new pieces from the outside and discard the old center. Every piece should contain a strong offshoot. Set your cuttings into the ground right away.

Keep your garden free from broad-spectrum pesticides. Broad-spectrum pesticides not only kill pests, but also “good” bugs like ground beetles that eat pests. Beneficial bugs usually have more sensitivity towards pesticides than bad ones. Therefore, if the number of beneficial bugs drops, the problem with pests can get bigger. Your problem will only get worse and you will find yourself using more pesticides.
