Before you plant anything in your garden, have the soil checked. There are soil testing services that can analyze a garden’s soil content for a small charge. With those results, it’s then possible to refine and supplement the soil to make it as fertile as possible. It can avoid ruined vegetables and flowers, so check with places, such as a cooperative extension department to see where you can obtain the analysis.

Grow some wheat grass or cat grass next to the plants your cat seems to prefer. It may also work to add citrus peelings or mothballs to the soil of the plants, because the odor is unpleasant to cats.

Always protect yourself from the sun when you are outdoors working in the garden; you can do this by wearing clothes that will shield you from the sun. Pair sunglasses with wide-brimmed hats and a dab of sunblock. Protecting yourself from the sun will lower the possibility of sunburn and skin cancer.

Heather can bring helpful critters into your garden. Bees will go straight for these plants in the spring. Heather beds are typically left untouched, which is why helpful little critters like ground beetles and spiders call them home. If you do have to tend to your heather, wear gloves in case you accidentally annoy one of the residents!

If you are going for a British feel with your garden, then vary the heights of your plants. By using plants which are all the same height your garden will appear flat and boring.

Your children will enjoy being involved with your organic gardening endeavors. Gardening helps your children learn about biological processes and serves as a social activity that helps the family grow closer while eating healthier.

If you’re growing plants indoors, keep your thermostat around 65 or 75 degrees daily. Your plants will not grow well if it is too cold. If this is a little too warm for your house, grow your organic plants under a heat lamp.

Pine mulch can be highly effective under the right conditions. Some plants need acidic soil to grow properly, because of their own acid content. Use pine needles to increase the acid level in your soil if you have plants that require higher acid. Cover your beds with the needles, as they will decompose and disperse their acid throughout the soil.

Do you prefer to eliminate weeds without the use of harmful chemicals? You will need many layers of newspapers. Weeds can only grow in sunlight. The newspaper will block sunlight and weeds won’t be able to grow. Newspapers also break down over time, becoming part of your compost. It can look more attractive by adding a mulch layer.

Don’t settle for produce that is inferior. You can grow your own vegetables and fruits in your organic garden.
