Your tool handles can double as measuring sticks. Tools with long handles such as hoes and rakes can double as measuring sticks. Plant a variety of annuals, biennials and perennials to keep your flower beds bright. Your flower beds will look different from one season to another. If you are growing vegetables in your garden, it is important that you have them in a spot where they can get at least six hours of sun a day. Most vegetables need at least that much sun exposure to grow properly. This is also true for some flowers.

Split up irises. You can increase your stock of irises by dividing up overgrown clumps. When the foliage dies it’s time to lift the bulbous irises out of the ground. The bulbs will split up naturally in your hand, and when replanted, will often flower the next year. Use a knife to carefully divide rhizomes. From the outside cut the new pieces and then get rid of the old center. Each piece should retain a minimum of one sturdy offshoot capable of spurting new growth. Immediately replant all your selected cuttings.

Gardening is an excellent relaxation tactic. While there are many different ways to relax, choosing the right one for you is key. One of the best ways to do this is gardening. The generous return of a garden far outweighs the minimal investment of money required. One particularly enjoyable return is the pride you will feel when you grow your own food.

Be smart when you water your garden. Utilize a soaker hose. This saves time as you need not water each plant one at a time with the nozzle of a hose or with a watering can. Use low water pressure with your soaker hose so that the force of the water does not harm sprouts and seedlings. Allow the soaker to stay on for a few hours, so your plants can receive water while you tend to other tasks.

Try to plant an English garden with a mix of plants with different heights, all within the same garden bed. Having plants that grow to the same height will result in a common and flat looking bed.
