All About Gardening

Take A Look At These Great Gardening Tips!

Gardening is more than decorating. In fact, it is even more than simply a hobby for enthusiasts with green thumbs. Gardens give the people working on them a feeling of serenity and a close bond with nature. Especially if you are good at it, its effects are profound.

Use the handles of your tools as a handy ruler when doing your outdoor chores. Handles of things such as rakes, hoes or shovels make excellent measuring instruments. Lay the handles on the floor, then run the measuring tape down next to them. Label the distances using a permanent marker. Next time you work in the garden, you can have a larger ruler with you!

Give your flower beds a boost by introducing annuals and biennials. Your flower beds will look different from one season to another. Sunny areas in the middle of shrubs and perennials can be filled in nicely with these plants. Notable varieties include cosmos, rudbeckia, petunia, hollyhock, marigold and sunflower.

If you see mildew that is powdery, stay away from expensive chemicals to treat it. Rather, you should mix a bit of baking soda with a small quantity of liquid soap in water. Use a spray bottle to apply to your plants weekly until the issue clears up. Baking soda is safe for use on your plants and is a gentle, but effective way to care for your plants.

You can alleviate this problem by planting grasses that your cat will naturally gravitate towards. Another option is to protect your plants by lacing them with offensive entities, such as peels from citrus fruit or even moth balls from your closet.

Protect your deciduous shrubs which are tender. Any potted shrubs should be sheltered in the winter from cold weather. Tie the canes together, and drape a sheet or blanket over the top of the wigwam. Using fabric, rather than plastic, allows air circulation and prevents rotting from moisture build up.

Look for targeted pesticides instead of using popular but damaging broad-spectrum products. This particular type of pesticide will also kill the useful insects that consume the pests. In fact, beneficial insects are more likely to die than pests if you spray these types of pesticides. As the population of “good” bugs dwindles, your garden may become overrun with pests. This can result in your using more pesticides to eradicate the problem.

An English garden mixes plants of various kinds and sizes close together, which helps to give it a more multi-dimensional feel. Plants that are all at the same height makes a garden bed look flat and uninteresting.

Are you a parent? If you are, try planting some strawberries like everbearing strawberries in your garden. Children will be more willing to help you if they can pluck their own fruit from the garden.

If you are growing plants inside of your home, you need to keep the thermostat set to 65 to 75 degrees during the day. The temperature needs to remain warm so they may grow. These temperatures may not be comfortable for you, however. As an alternative to keeping your entire home that warm, consider getting heat lamps for your organic plants.

Don’t let the chores for your organic garden pile up. Not everyone has time to tend their gardens every day, but by doing little things whenever you have a chance, you can avoid having things pile up. For example, snatch out a weed or two whenever you pass by the garden, such as when you take your dog out for a potty break.

Use the knowledge you have gained here to resuscitate your garden today. You’ll be so happy to see your beautiful plants afterward. Gardening can literally change your life, but only if you put in the effort and do it!
