Tips To Help You In Making The Right Gardening Decisions

Gardening is a complex hobby, but it doesn’t have to be confusing or difficult. Once you have decided to garden organically, you need to learn about your soil’s pH balance, as well as things like natural pesticides. It can be difficult to switch to organic gardening methods for a beginner. Be sure you can hang with even the pros by using the tips you learn from this article.

Having healthy soil in your garden is your number one defense against pests! The hearty plants that will grow in a garden with rich soil can resist the bugs and diseases that weak plants can’t withstand. For healthy plants, start with healthy soil that is properly amended and free of chemicals in order to avoid salt accumulation.

For the right results, get the right type of soil. Different types of plants require different soils, so check soil requirements for the ones you choose. You can also make an artificial area using only one type of soil.

Do not mow your lawn close to the bottom. If you leave more height to your grass, the roots will grow deeper into the soil, making the lawn stronger and more resistant to drying out. If the grass is too short, it produces shallow roots and that leads to a lawn with brown spots and dried-out patches.

Start your garden off right with seeds, not plants. When planting a garden, the best way is to initially start with seeds. It is common for commercial plants to be packaged in plastic that is not commonly recycled, and therefore, it is better to use seeds or purchase plantings only from merchants who make use of organic packaging.

You should think about planting evergreens that yield berries in your garden. The evergreens will add some color to your garden or yard, especially during the winter, when other plants have died or lost color. Plants that provide instant winter color include Holly, Winterberry, American Cranberrybush, and the American Holly.

Be aware of the optimum time frame for harvesting vegetables. Different veggies have different windows of time in which they should be picked; it is during this period that the vegetable is most flavorful. For instance, peas and zucchinis are tastiest when picked young. Tomatoes, though, are tastiest when they have been allowed to ripen on the vine as long as possible. Simply educate yourself on what the best time is to harvest each of your garden vegetables.

Make sure to water your garden properly. Use a hose with a soaker attachment to save you time, so the garden can get watered while you are doing other tasks. Be sure to keep the pressure of the water on low so that the hose does not damage the tender plants. Just use it on your foliage for a few hours.

Make sure that you wear appropriate clothing when you garden so as to avoid any sun damage. Try wearing a large sunhat and sunglasses to protect your face and eyes, and use sunscreen on any exposed skin. Protecting yourself from harmful UV rays means you are less likely to get sunburned or suffer skin cancer later in life.

Now, you shouldn’t get your hopes up and believe that a few tips are going to turn you into an instant professional gardener. However, these tips are a great starting point if you do plan to grow organically. As you implement these tips and hone your skills, you’ll be a professional green-thumb-holder in no time.
