Are you coveting thy neighbors lawn? It’s possible in your mind’s eye that the neighbor is doing something unique. There is not a secret behind having a wonderful garden. All you need is the knowledge about how to care for your plants the right way. Begin building your knowledge base by reading the gardening advice in this article.

Healthy soil will be your best defense against the pests that can invade your garden. Healthy plants grown in robust and enriched soil have an advantage in fighting pest infestation. So if you want your garden to provide plants that are as healthy as possible, you need a good quality soil that contains few chemicals and that can accumulate salts over time.

Brighten your garden with biennials and annuals. Using a variety of flowers allows your flower garden to have a different look each season. You can fill any spaces between shrubs and perennials when they are in the sun. There are many flowers you can plant in these gaps. Try marigolds, petunias or sunflowers for a brighter garden.

Your soil needs to be of good quality before you start a garden. You can get a soil analysis, and if you find your soil needs a supplement, do it! Save yourself the trouble of a failed crop by contacting your local Cooperative Extension to preform the soil test.

Keep the weeds out of your garden by removing them regularly. Weeds steal nutrients from plants, robbing a garden of its potential harvest. A clever way to accomplish this is with the help of some white vinegar. White vinegar can not only kill the weeds, it’s also a non-toxic spray that won’t harm pets or people. Put some white vinegar in a spray bottle, and spray directly on weeds. If you don’t want to pull weeds out by hand anymore, give vinegar a try.

Plant bulbs in your garden if you want flowers through spring and summer. Bulbs are one of the easiest plants to grow and are hardy perennials that return each year. Choose from the variety of bulbs that bloom at various times of the growing season for a garden of color all spring and summer long.

Try growing wheat grass or cat grass in the area of the plants your cat wants to eat. Try putting mothballs or citrus on your soil to wards pets away.

As you cut your grass, do not trim it too low to the ground. By leaving your grass a little higher off the ground, it give the roots a chance to grow deep into the soil which makes the lawn stronger, and that helps keep it from drying out. Leaving the grass short makes it more prone to drying out, which leaves your lawn look really brown and yucky.

If the soil in your garden has a high concentration of alkaline, try mixing some coffee grounds into your garden’s soil. This is a great and cheap way to increase the acid levels in your dirt. You will notice that your vegetables and greens will have a stronger taste.

Do you love fresh mint leaves but hate how they quickly grow to take over your garden? Control their expansion by confining them to a large pot. You can even plant the container in the ground. That way, the roots won’t be able to escape the container, and the plant won’t overrun your garden.

It’s pretty easy to see that these tips don’t require too much effort to follow. Just apply the lessons outlined here and assess their effectiveness in your own garden. Be sure to know the requirements of your plants, flowers and vegetables before you begin planting your garden. Experimenting with already existing plants will only lead to disaster. Do your research, take time to tend to your garden and be patient to see amazing results.
